Reckon this Byron Bay-based grommet is ahead of his time? Garrett was sponsored even before he'd turned 10. At one stage, by the local milk bar who gave him $5 a month, or $10 if it happened to be July, his birthday. A reporter once asked him what he spent the money on. "Lollies!" replied Garrett. Mentored by WCT surfer and fellow Byron surfing success, Danny Wills, Garrett's rise is already mirroring that of the former world number three; a childhood star taken under the wing by an established great - just like Willsy was influenced by Tom Carroll. Garrett's father, respected surfer/shaper David, also overseeshis son's steady progress. Supported, witty, talented, this young teenager is certainly well placed to build an exciting career. Quiksilver rider Matt Hoy uses a recorded version of Garrett's nightmarish-scream as his mobile ring-tone.
